The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what's bringing you to therapy, a bit about your background, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. But it's also a chance for you to ask me anything, including about my approach, how sessions work, or whatever else is on your mind. There's no pressure to dive deep right away! The goal is for you to leave feeling like you have a sense of whether this feels like the right fit.
Additionally in the beginning, we’ll go over informed consent, the limits of confidentiality, and some other brief logistics to help us understand what we can expect and what is expected of us in therapy. -
If you're asking this question, that's a good sign! You don't need to be in crisis to start therapy. A lot of people come in because something just feels off, because they're carrying more than they want to keep carrying alone, or they want to learn about who they are. If you're curious but still feel unsure, the free consultation is a low-pressure way to explore that. If you need more time to get a feel for things, scheduling a first session is a great way to get a taste of what therapy can look like before committing.

It depends (I know that’s not the most satisfying answer). Some people come for a few months to work through something specific, while others stay longer in order to go deeper. We’ll check in regularly about how things are feeling and what you need. There’s no set timeline and also no pressure to stay longer than feels right for you.

The work is the same! The only difference is the setting. In-person sessions happen at my office in San Francisco, and telehealth sessions happen over secure video from wherever you are in California. Some people prefer the separate space, the routine of coming in, and connecting in the same physical space, while others like the flexibility of logging on from home. We can figure out what works best for you, and you're welcome to mix both if our schedules align.

Life happens, I get it. I ask for at least 48 hours notice for cancellations, since that time is set aside every week just for you. Late cancellations or missed sessions are charged the full session rate. If we’re able to reschedule to a different day within the same week, the fee does not apply. That said, I’m always happy to work with you on finding a time that works better if your schedule shifts.

I don’t accept insurance directly, but I’m happy to provide monthly superbills you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so I’d recommend calling your provider to ask about your specific benefits.
Some helpful questions to ask them:What are my out-of-network mental health benefits?
Do I have a deductible and how much is it?
How many therapy sessions per year are covered?
What amount will you cover per session for an out-of-network provider?
What is the process for submitting claims?
How long does reimbursement take?
Are there any diagnoses excluded from coverage?

Under the No Surprises Act, you're entitled to a good faith estimate — a document outlining the expected cost of your care. I’m happy to provide one that includes the anticipated number of sessions and cost per session. The actual cost may vary depending on your needs, so feel free to reach out for a personalized estimate.
